The child spends a large part of the week at school. If the school and clinic work on different goals with different strategies, the child receives contradictory messages and generalization takes longer. Integration does not require everyone to do the same thing, but to work in the same direction.

Start with what the school needs

Before bringing the clinical plan, ask the school what their greatest difficulties are in the classroom: transitions, group participation, communication with peers, or behavior in specific moments. Goals that solve a real problem for the school gain buy-in faster.

What to bring to the meeting

  • A summary of what the child already does well, in simple language.
  • Two or three goals that also make sense at school.
  • Concrete strategies: how to present an instruction, what prompt to offer, how to reinforce.
  • What the team would like to know from the school, and how often.

Avoid bringing the entire plan. Too much information makes implementation difficult.

Common goals

For each shared goal, agree on:

  1. How the skill appears in the school routine.
  2. Who will teach or demand it: teacher, shadow teacher, or both.
  3. How the school will record or report what happened.
  4. When the team will talk about it again.

The shadow teacher in the classroom

When the child has a shadow teacher, they are the daily link between both environments. Ensure they know the agreed-upon goals, know how to record the essentials, and have a direct channel with the supervision.

Recording school supervision

Every visit or meeting with the school must be recorded: participants, what was observed, what was agreed upon, and who does what. Without this, agreements are lost during teacher or semester changes.

School in Proaba

In Proaba, intervention plans can be separated by location (clinic, school, or home) with the professionals responsible for each one, and notes are marked by location, which makes it easier to filter everything that happened at school. A voice note from a school supervision can become a supervision note, with action items grouped by person responsible, and each note has its own visibility.
